Diamondbacks’ GM Mike Hazen takes a look back on the 2025 season
After just missing the playoffs, Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen put his assessment of the season into words.
Arizona Diamondbacks star Corbin Carroll has been named as one of three finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove in right field for the National League.
The other two finalists are San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Sal Frelick. This competition is stiff.
Frelick won the NL Gold Glove last year for right fielders, and Tatis won the NL Gold Glove in 2023 for right fielders. On top of that, Tatis won the Platinum Glove that season.
As for Frelick, Carroll has the numbers advantage. Carroll made just one error this season and posted a .997 fielding percentage. Frelick made three errors this season with a .990 fielding percentage.
While Frelick recorded nine defensive runs saved this season in right field and Carroll recorded seven in right field, Frelick totaled six outs above average in right while Carroll racked up nine in right. On top of that, Carroll’s 0.4 defensive WAR in 2025 (per Baseball Reference) is higher than Frelick’s 0.2 in 2025.
While Frelick took home the Gold Glove last year, both players deliver good eye-test results and Carroll’s overall statistics are better. He will have a chance to top him in the voting. As for topping Tatis in the voting, things get more complicated.
There are stats that Carroll is better than Tatis. For instance, Carroll has a .997 fielding percentage with one error compared to Tatis’ .992 fielding percentage with three errors. Carroll’s nine outs above average in right field are higher than Tatis’ eight in right field.
Tatis’ defensive runs saved number of 15 in right, though, is higher than Carroll’s seven. Tatis’ defensive WAR (per Baseball Reference) is also 1.1 compared to Carroll’s 0.4.
On top of that, Tatis is a walking highlight reel in right field for San Diego. While anyone paying attention to Carroll during games can see an effective right fielder who plays his position cleanly and effectively, Tatis’ acrobatics at the position typically lead to be seen as the better fielder from an eye-test standpoint.
Both Carroll and Tatis have enough stats in their favor for both sides to make a statistical case. They are about even in the metrics. Therefore, Tatis’ frequent web gems could be the deciding factor between the two NL West All-Stars.
Beating out defending Gold Glove winner Frelick is no easy task, and beating out Tatis in a year like this may be even tougher.
Carroll is rightfully in the discussion no matter what, though, in a year when he had the best defensive season of his career. His speed, as well as having a right fielder’s arm, are why he has been worth every penny of his 2023 extension so far.
