The Colorado Rockies had the chance to perk up Colorado sports fans after a brutal, season-ending loss by the Denver Nuggets in game seven against the Oklahoma City Thunder by over 30 points. They won against the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday and a win today would represent the Rockies’ first series win of the 2025 season. Unfortunately, the Rockies offense was largely absent until the ninth inning, and even then they were unable to capitalize despite the Diamondbacks scoring only one run.

Dollander solid despite shaky start

Despite a shaky start where he threw over 50 pitches through the first two innings, Rockies starter Chase Dollander stood tall on the mound and performed admirably on the mound. Dollander gave up just one earned run—a solo home run by Ketel Marte—on three hits and two walks as he worked 4 2⁄3 innings against what can be a potent Diamondbacks offense. He struck out six batters, but unfortunately his high pitch count ended his day early. After giving up his third hit of the day with two outs in the fifth inning, Dollander was pulled with 98 pitches thrown. Left-handed rookie Ryan Rolison recorded the final out of the inning to close the book on Dollander.

Rockin’ Rolison

Ryan Rolison’s big league career is off to a strong start. He’s yet to give up an earned run in his first four innings coming out of a major league bullpen. When starter Chase Dollander was unable to continue with a high pitch count, Rolison came in and pitched a scoreless 2 1⁄3 innings while giving up no walks and just one hit. While Rolison did not strike anyone out this afternoon and has just one career punchout so far, he looks confident on the mound and should be interesting to watch through the rest of the season.

A mirage in the desert

After putting up 14 runs in a back-and-forth slugfest last night, the Rockies’ offense completely vanished for the majority of this afternoon’s affair. The Rockies were hitless through five innings until Jordan Beck opened up the sixth inning with a double. He would remain the Rockies’ only hit until the top of the ninth inning. In the ninth the Rockies managed to hit two singles (Farmer, Goodman) to have a runner on second base for second time during the ballgame. An intentional walk to Ryan McMahon juiced the bases with just one out, but the Rockies were unable to plate a single run and were shutout yet again. Rockies batters also struck out 14 times in the third of their last four games.

Coming Up Next

The Rockies will head home to Coors Field to kick off a seven-game homestand that starts tomorrow evening. Kyle Freeland will start the first of four games against the Philadelphia Phillies and lefty Cristopher Sánchez. First pitch will be at 6:40 PM MDT.
