ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — It was near the end of summer when Fargo Post 2’s Sam Ovsak wanted to make a change.
Ovsak, who had returned to Post 2 for his final year after playing one season of college football at St. John’s, wanted to switch his focus to baseball.
His decision to play college baseball was largely inspired as a way to honor his former teammate Boden Meier, who has been hospitalized since May after a golf cart accident.
“Something was just telling me after this Post 2 season that I wasn’t going to be done,” Ovsak said.
Ovsak joined the Alexandria Technical College baseball team in the fall. The Legends compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

For Ovsak, it was about playing for his friend and teammate, knowing full well that Meier would be playing, too.
“I want to play for Bo,” Ovsak said. “He might not ever get a chance to do this again. It pushes me a lot knowing that I’m doing this for Bo and others out there.”
Meier suffered a brain bleed after
on May 11 in Omaha, Nebraska. Meier, who is receiving medical care at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, underwent surgery recently to help prevent muscle stiffness and spasms, according to his
page.
Among the countless memories the pair shared throughout the years, South-Shanley’s 2023 boys hockey title and a dogpile experience following Post 2’s Central Plains championship that ended with a pair of sunglasses wedged in Ovsak’s ear, remain some of Ovsak’s favorite memories of Meier.
“A lot of fun memories,” Ovsak said. “He’s one of the funniest guys that I know.”

The move to college baseball has been relatively easy for Ovsak. Other than a slight change to his swing, Ovsak has been enjoying his time with the Legends.
Alexandria TC head coach Brandon Hill said Ovsak brings a competitive edge in the leadoff spot.
“(He’s) a big contributor for us in a lot of different ways,” Hill said. “Finds ways to get on base, take extra bases, brings athleticism and brings good defense.”
Ovsak was a two-time, all-state selection with the Shanley football team and won the state championship with the Deacons in 2022. He also helped the Deacons baseball team hoist their second state tournament title in 2024.
Both trophies were won alongside Meier.
Someone who Ovsak keeps close in his thoughts, as Meier continues in his recovery process.
“I’m always worried about how he’s doing, what’s coming up next and what the future may hold,” Ovsak said.
