The San Francisco Giants didn’t have a great defensive showing in 2025, but two members of the team have emerged as Rawlings Gold Glove finalists.

One Giants finalist was expected, and the other finalist was somewhat unexpected.

Catcher Patrick Bailey is not only a finalist for a third time in three years, but a strong favorite to win his second Gold Glove. Winners are determined based primarily on statistical qualifications, and the numbers have Bailey ranked as the best catcher in baseball. Some have him ranked as the best overall defensive player in baseball.

The surprising Giants finalist is pitcher Logan Webb, up for his first Gold Glove. Webb made strides in holding base runners and is the top ranked pitcher defensively in the National League, according to the SABR Defensive Index, which accounts for 25% of the Gold Glove vote.

Webb was effective in cleaning up the many ground balls he induced that came his way – his 34 assists and three double plays led the league. Quicker to the plate this year, Webb allowed only nine stolen bases and caught seven, a huge improvement from the 21 stolen bases he allowed in 2024.

Bailey’s value behind the plate comes primarily from his pitch framing and his arm. He recorded a plus-31 fielding run value, best in baseball and nine runs better than the runner-up, Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. A Bailey win would make him the first Giants catcher to win multiple Gold Glove awards. He’s up against the Chicago Cubs’ Carson Kelly and New York Mets catcher Luis Torrens.

Left off the list of finalists is third baseman Matt Chapman, a five-time winner at the position, including last year with the Giants. A pesky hand injury kept Chapman out for 34 games, putting him at a statistical disadvantage. He finished the year with a fielding run value ranked third in the National League and five defensive runs saved. Ke’Bryan Hayes, who was traded from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati in midseason, is a finalist and favorite to win the award, with Ryan McMahon and Chicago’s Matt Shaw also named finalists. McMahon was traded from Colorado to the New York Yankees midseason.
