FLANDREAU, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The opening weekend for pheasant season in South Dakota always draws in hunters from all over. Many come back to the same spots, towns, or hunting lodges that they know to meet up with familiar faces.
The rooster rush draws in people from all walks of life, including former professional athletes.
Former Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins catcher Terry Steinbach was part of a hunt at Al’s Dream just outside of Flandreau this weekend.
Steinbach said getting to spend time with others while enjoying nature is what the hunt is all about.
“I mean, there’s a lot about trying to get your limit. But again, for most of the sportsmen, it’s about the camaraderie. It’s about laughing when you miss. It’s about complementing your partner on a good shot. It’s just really about getting out and enjoying nature. Al’s Dream here does a great job with their fields and the number of birds that they have,” Steinbach said.
Al’s Dream said their bird numbers this year have been high, and they expect that same increase for other areas of the state.
