Baseball, we will have a Game 7.
The Toronto Blue Jays struck early and often in Game 6 of the ALCS on Sunday en route to a 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
The win was Toronto’s first at home in the ALCS and only the second win by the home team in this series. It sets up a winner-take-all Game 7 on Monday with a trip to the World Series at stake.

The Blue Jays will be seeking their first World Series trip since they won it all in 1993. The Mariners will be looking to clinch the first World Series berth in franchise history. The winner will take on a Los Angeles Dodgers team that’s seeking a second straight title and just swept the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLCS.

The Blue Jays set up Sunday’s win with timely early hitting that secured a 4-0 lead through three innings. They then shut down multiple Mariners scoring chances with inning-ending double plays in three straight frames from the third through the fifth. Sloppy play from Seattle, including three errors and a wild pitch, helped Toronto tack on some insurance and hold on for the win.
Addison Barger, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. HRs put Mariners in early hole
Logan Gilbert got the start for the Mariners and lasted just four innings on a night the Blue Jays posted 11 hits. In the second inning, they scored two runs off three singles and an error for a 2-0 lead. Addison Barger then doubled that lead with a two-run home run in the fourth.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a leadoff home run in the fifth to extend Toronto’s lead to 5-0 and put an end to Gilbert’s night. That was more than enough offense for the Blue Jays.
Seattle put some pressure on in the later innings, cutting Toronto’s lead to 5-2. But the Mariners couldn’t mount a threat against Toronto starter Trey Yesavage until the sixth, and the Blue Jays’ bullpen efforts from Louis Varland and Jeff Hoffman closed out the win.

Seattle squanders chances
The Mariners had their chances in Game 6 but they couldn’t capitalize after loading the bases in the third and fourth innings.
Seattle loaded the bases with one out in the third on a Julio RodrÃguez walk to set up home run king and MVP candidate Cal Raleigh with a chance to play the hero. But Raleigh’s at-bat lasted just one pitch. He hit a soft ground ball to first base off a Yesavage splitter for an inning-ending double play.
The Mariners loaded the bases again in the fourth. This time, a walk of Eugenio Suárez put the third runner on with a single out in the inning.

And once again, Yesavage forced a ground ball and got a big assist from his defense. He induced a ground ball to second base from J.P. Crawford, which set up a 4-6-3 double play.
Per the Fox broadcast, that double play marked the second time in playoff history that a team ended bases-loaded situations in consecutive innings by hitting into a double play. The first was the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1953 World Series.
The Mariners didn’t load the bases again in the fifth. But they got a leadoff single from Dominic Canzone, and with one out, Yesavage again ended the inning by inducing a double play. That marked the fifth time in playoff history that a team hit into three consecutive inning-ending double plays.

The missed chances ultimately proved too much for Seattle to overcome. Yesavage allowed six hits and three walks to get into his jams. But he recorded six strikeouts and leaned on those double plays to limit the damage. In the end, he allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings and picked up the win.
Varland allowed Yesavage’s second earned run when he came on in relief in the sixth. But he and Hoffman didn’t allow the Mariners to score again across 3 1/3 combined innings of relief.
With that, the Mariners and Blue Jays will face off one more time Monday (8:08 p.m. ET, Fox/FS1) for the right to play in the World Series. The loser’s season will be over.
