The Arizona Fall League has now finished their second week and the Mesa Solar Sox won three and lost three over the past week. That gives them an overall record of 4-6, which puts them in fifth place in the six-team AFL. However, they’re just three games out of first and a game and a half game out of second place.

Just as a reminder, the Arizona Fall League is a postseason minor league where prospects can get in more work before the winter starts. This year, Mesa Solar Sox is made up of minor leaguers from the Cubs, Athletics, Yankees, Marlins and Rays.

Here’s how the Cubs on the Solar Sox did this past week.

Before we go into this week for Ayers, we have to mention that Ayers was named Arizona League Player of the week for Week 1. So congratulations to him.

Ayers got off to a great start to Week Two as well, hitting a three-run home run on Tuesday. He was the DH in that game. Ayers caught on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. For the week, Ayers went 4 for 14 with a double and the home run. He walked five times, scored three times and had four runs batted in.

Over the first two weeks, Ayers is hitting .360 with three doubles, two home runs and six walks. Ayers has a .484 on-base percentage and a .720 slugging. Ayers has eight RBI and two runs scored.

Howard played three games this week. He was the shortstop in Thursday’s game, the DH on Friday and the second baseman on Saturday. Adding up the contests, Howard was 1 for 8 with two walks and one run scored.

Overall, Howard is hitting .071/.133/.071 with two runs scored. Things could be going better.

Corner infielder Cole Mathis:

Mathis hit his first home run in the AFL on Sunday, a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Mathis played three games this past week, all at first base. On Tuesday Mathis went 0 for 2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. In Friday’s shutout rout by Scottsdale, he was 0 for 3. But on Sunday, Mathis broke out with the home run. He was 2 for 4 with a walk and the three RBI. Mathis scored twice.

For the week, Mathis was 2 for 9 with a home run and two walks. For the entire AFL season, Mathis is hitting .400/.474/.600 over five games. He has seven RBI and three runs scored.

Right-hander Luis Martinez-Gomez:

Martinez-Gomez pitched the final two innings in the win over Surprise on Tuesday, picking up the save. Martinez-Gomez pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out five. He also hit one batter.

For the season, he’s thrown three innings over two games and has allowed one run. That’s a 3.00 ERA. Martinez-Gomez has struck out seven, walked two and hit one batter.

Right-hander Koen Moreno:

Moreno threw three strong innings of relief on Wednesday, allowing no runs and just two hits. He walked two and struck out four.

For the campaign, Moreno has pitched twice, totalling seven innings, and has yet to allow a run. Moreno has surrendered four hits, issued four walks and struck out seven.

The good pitching news ends with Moreno. Peters got into Wednesday’s game in relief and couldn’t finish the fourth inning. Peters pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs on one hit, three walks and one hit batter. He did strike out one.

Peters pitched again on Sunday and did better, giving up two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings. He also only walked one. Peters did not have a strikeout in Sunday’s game.

For the AFL, Peters has pitched three times and has given up four runs on five hits over 3.2 innings for an ERA of 9.82. He’s walked four, hit one and struck out one.

Wheat entered Saturday’s game in the fifth inning and despite a leadoff error, he faced the minimum after a double play and a fly out. But then he came out to pitch the sixth inning and got rocked again. The first batter hit a solo home run off of him. That was followed by a single and three-straight walks, after which he got pulled from the game.

So Wheat’s final line for Saturday’s game was four runs on two hits over 1+ innings. Wheat walked three and struck out no one.

So over two appearances in the AFL, Wheat has pitched two innings (plus parts of two more where he failed to retire a batter) and has allowed eight runs on four hits and six walks. That’s an ERA of 36.00.
