OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The top state lawmaker in the Sunflower State expects a stadium proposal from the Kansas City Royals at an upcoming Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC) meeting.

In an interview with FOX4 Friday, Republican State Senate President Ty Masterson said it was his understanding the only site the Royals were considering on the Kansas side of state line was the old Sprint campus, now known as Aspiria. Masterson told FOX4 he does not know Mayor Curt Skoog that well.

“I do know a majority of the Royals fans are on our side of the fence, so it makes sense,” Masterson said that day.

Masterson says he believes there are more Royals season ticket holders on the Kansas side than the Missouri side. The Royals haven’t commented on that. They also wouldn’t comment Monday whether they will be submitting a proposal to Kansas state leaders at the next LCC meeting or not.

Masterson chairs the LCC. It has set an end of the year calendar date for the team on whether they’re planning to move to the Sunflower State.

“I am anticipating being presented with a proposal from the Department of Commerce and the team either at my late November or early December LCC Meeting,” Masterson continued. “That’s what I’m expecting.”

City elections are Tuesday, November 4th and the northwest corner of 119th and Nall is in Ward 3. Candidate Amy Scrivner is one of the people running to take Jim Kite’s position. Kite’s retiring.

Scrivner says the vast majority of the homeowners she talks to near the site say they do not like the idea of a ballpark going up near their properties.

“For me, without a proposal in front of me… I would need to see that,” Scrivner said. “But my gut leans towards what the residents are saying.”

Scrivner’s going up against former city council member Tom Carignan November 4th. He was not able to do an interview with FOX4 Monday.

“I think baseball is best downtown or in the urban core,” Carignan told FOX4 via email Monday. “Every stadium I’ve visited over the past few years has been in a downtown and I loved them. Regarding the OP site, I’d have to know what was going on and spend time with residents before making a decision.”

The new city council gets sworn in Monday, December 1st. In interviews about this topic in late July, Mayor Skoog seemed more open to the idea of the Royals moving to his city than his November challenger Faris Farassati.
