A lot of bad things happened to the Colorado Rockies this year. Their 119 losses were the fourth-most in baseball’s modern era, they fired their manager in Bud Black, their general manager and assistant general manager both found the exit door at the season’s end, and there’s not a lot of optimism that things can get turned around at 20th and Blake anytime soon.
However, there was one man who gave a glimpse towards the light at the end of the tunnel, Hunter Goodman. The 26-year-old catcher burst onto the scene this season with one of the best hitting performances by a Rockie in recent memory, highlighted by his 31 home runs. He slashed .278/.323/.520 in the 144 games he played in, and recorded another 33 extra-base hits on top of his dingers.
As a result for his stellar play, Goodman was named as a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award on Wednesday. His name is alongside two other catchers who also put together solid seasons, the Brewers’ William Contreras and the Dodgers’ Will Smith. Only one of these guys will come away with the award, a nomination that’s decided by votes by various managers and coaches around the league.

Contreras finished the season with 17 home runs and 28 doubles while slashing .260/.355/.399. Out on the West Coast, Smith racked up 17 homers, 20 doubles and a triple while slashing .296/.404/.497. His .404 on-base percentage would’ve been the second-best number in the league, only behind Aaron Judge, but he didn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify.
Goodman’s 31 home runs sure were fun to watch, but it might be tough for him to get the nod over two guys who were much more consistent at the plate than he was. However, he did become the first NL catcher in 22 seasons to eclipse the 30-home run mark, so that feat on its own could potentially hold more weight than the production from the other two.
For the Rockies organization, there hasn’t been a Silver Slugger in town since Trevor Story won the award back in 2019 as the National League’s nominee for shortstop. Overall, there have been 16 players who have combined to win 32 Silver Slugger Awards in franchise history. Nolan Arenado and Todd Helton each won the award four times, tied for the most among any Rockie.
The NL winners will be announced 0n Nov. 6 at 4:00 p.m. MDT.
