The Colorado Rockies are rounding third and heading for home when it comes to deciding who will be leading their front office; reports show the team has reached the finalist stage of their job hunt.
The Athletic’s Brittany Ghiroli and Ken Rosenthal report that Guardians assistant general manager Matt Forman and Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye are under consideration for the Rockies opening.
They say it’s possible others are still in the mix. But both former Astros general manager James Click and Royals assistant general manager Scott Sharp are no longer being considered.
Sawdaye began with the Boston Red Sox and worked his way up to the director of amateur scouting. He then followed Mike Hazen to Arizona, where he’s earned the title of ’ senior vice president and assistant general manager. He actually took over the general manager job for a bit in 2021 when Haven went on leave.
Both Forman and Sawdaye were among the group considered for the Nationals executive job that went to Paul Toboni. Forman has worked next to Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff in Cleveland since 2013, when he was an intern. He’s gotten all the way up to the top of the organization, last getting a promotion to executive vice president in 2022.
Walker Monfort, who has taken a way bigger role with the franchise since his promotion earlier this summer, said he was going to look at external candidates. Just opening up this job to the baseball world is a big change from the usual with the Rockies, who are well-known for keeping it in-house or in the family for roles within the club. Monfort and his father Dick, are still working on what the title will be for the winner: president or general manager.
The Rockies are in this spot because Jeff Bridich quit after the Nolan Arenado fiasco, leading to Bill Schmidt taking over. He was fired/left the Rockies at season’s end, a third straight year of 100 or more losses
The Rockies likely want their new leader ahead of MLB’s general manager meetings next month.
