Now that Tony Vitello is the new manager of the San Francisco Giants, legendary major league pitcher Curt Schilling has expressed interest in the Vols’ baseball coaching job left open by Vitello.

Schilling, who won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks and two with the Boston Red Sox, retired in 2009 lives in Tennessee.

The six-time All-Star, who spent some time as a baseball broadcast analyst, has been a controversial figure because of his activity on social media that included anti-Semitic, anti-transgender and Islamaphobic comments.

Schilling, who will be 59 in November, has no coaching experience on the college or professional level.

Vols pitching coach Frank Anderson has been named the interim coach. The Vols have played in three of the past five College World Series and won the national championship for the first time in school history in 2024.
