Colton Mathis is no stranger to Lowndes Academy baseball. He has helped with varsity and junior varsity teams as a parent, volunteer and assistant coach off and on since 2014 and now the Rebels welcome him as a teacher and head varsity baseball coach.

Mathis assumes the role after 2025 coach, alumnus David Hussey, who coaches now at Prattville.

“I’ve been a baseball coach at Lowndes since 2014, off and on,” Mathis. “And, so, as soon as coach David decided to go to Prattville and leave — I coached with him last year — I just put my name in, and it just kind of worked out.”

As assistant coach for 10 years, Mathis said he has also helped with basketball and football teams. Having played baseball himself since age eight, Mathis said his love of the game and desire to mentor student-athletes drew him to coaching.

“I’ve loved the game of baseball and played it since I was about eight years old,” Mathis said. “Helping these kids grow up to be good young men and hopefully fathers one day, trying to lead these kids in a better direction, is the only reason I coach.”
