A trio of Seattle Mariners were honored Thursday with the announcement of The Sporting News’ MLB awards for 2025, headlined by their skipper.

Dan Wilson has won American League Manager of the Year honors from the publication, whose annual baseball awards date back 100 years to 1925.

Additionally, catcher Cal Raleigh and center fielder Julio Rodríguez were named Sporting News AL All-Stars.

Wilson’s honor came from a peer vote of MLB managers.

Wilson is the first M’s skipper to win AL Manager of the Year from The Sporting News since his old manager in Seattle, Lou Piniella, in 2001. That’s fitting as Wilson led the Mariners to their first AL West division title since 2001 with a 90-72 record in his first full season at the helm.

Wilson, who replaced Scott Servais as M’s manager in late August 2024, took the Mariners as close as they’ve ever been to the World Series, winning three games and going to the full seven games in the AL Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Seattle’s postseason run ended Monday night with a 4-3 loss after George Springer’s three-run home run in the seventh inning turned a two-run M’s lead into a one-run M’s deficit.

The Sporting News All-Stars are “chosen by the people who are paid to recognize major-league talent, executives in decision-making roles, typically general managers and assistant GMs,” according to an article published Thursday announcing the AL and National League teams.

Raleigh, the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani were unanimous picks as All-Stars. Raleigh and Judge are the top two AL MVP candidates for 2025.

With 60 home runs, the 28-year-old Raleigh broke the MLB records for most homers in a single season by both a catcher and a switch-hitter, as well as the Mariners’ single-season homer record. He added five more in the postseason, giving him the most homers in a calendar year – regular season and playoffs combined – of any player in AL history with 65.

Raleigh led MLB in homers, led the AL with 125 RBIs, and had a career-best year at the plate with a .247/.359/.589 slash line for a .948 OPS. Raleigh’s huge breakout with the bat came in his first season after winning both the AL Gold Glove at catcher and the AL’s Platinum Glove as the best defender in the league regardless of position.

Raleigh was the first Mariners player to lead MLB in home runs since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997, the first Mariners player to lead the AL in home runs since Griffey in 1999, and the first Mariners player to lead the AL in RBIs since Nelson Cruz in 2017.

Rodríguez, 24, is a Sporting News All-Star for the third time in his career. He slashed .267/.324/.474 for a .798 OPS while hitting 32 home runs with 95 RBIs and stealing 30 bases on 36 attempts. Defensively, he was 97th percentile in range (outs above average) and 95th percentile in arm strength, per Statcast.

Raleigh and Rodríguez were also named AL Silver Slugger finalists on Thursday along with teammate Jorge Polanco.
