Lovullo helps lifelong friend battling cancer in Fiesta Bowl Par 3 Challenge

  • October 24, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Torey Lovullo spends most of his time chasing victories.

The Arizona Diamondbacks manager was the winner of the 2025 Fiesta Bowl Par 3 Challenge this week. The bigger victory that he is chasing is for his friend lifelong friend Dean Singer.

“It’s been 53 years. We met in first grade. I’d crack jokes; he’d laugh. We’d both get in trouble,” said Singer at Mountain Shadows on Thursday.

Singer has been battling stage four cancer for three and a half years. A routine visit to his doctor found a 6-pound tumor on his kidney.

What followed were appointments, surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and multiple hospital stays, along with continuing to work a fulltime job. The cancer has spread, but Singer, along with the support of Lovullo, continues to fight.

“I’d say it’s the worst thing; you’ve got to tell your friends you’re going to be in for a battle and need some help,” Singer said. “It’s one of the best things to raise money for people that don’t have this exposure.”

Singer is determined that “No One Fights Alone.” He started with a goal of raising $50,000. That goal was reached in a week. Then he decided to hit $100,000. It took six days.

With the help of Lovullo’s golf swing at the Fiesta Bowl Par 3 Media Challenge, the number is now above $120,000.

“The initial conversations when he was talking about his disease were tough,” Lovullo said. “They were brutal, but once I got through it, I decided that I wasn’t going to let him quit.”

There are more doctor appointments. The cancer has spread. But Singer has decided to live each day with a simple mindset.

“Carpe Diem,” he said. “I get to wake up today and live life.”
