Dodgers and Blue Jays discuss what makes Shohei Ohtani a special player

USA TODAY Sports caught up with members of the Dodgers and Blue Jays ahead of the World Series to discuss the unique talents of Shoehi Ohtani .

Sports Pulse

The Toronto Blue Jays are in the World Series for the first time since 1993 and looking for their third title in franchise history as they try to end a three-plus-decade drought.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, meanwhile, are in the World Series for the second straight season and looking for their third title in the last six seasons.

The 2025 Fall Classic features a franchise craving to get back to the top, with another seeking to further cement itself as a dynasty of the 2020s and the premier team in the MLB.

It’s an enticing matchup of star-driven, high-priced teams. Toronto was the best team in the American League during the regular season with a top-tier offense, while the Dodgers appear to be on a mission and playing the best of anyone in the playoffs.

Will the Dodgers continue their dominance and become the first team to repeat in 25 years? Or will the Blue Jays keep the momentum from their emotional AL Championship Series with an entire country behind them?

Here’s how to watch the World Series, including the full schedule, prediction and postseason bracket:

Dodgers vs Blue Jays prediction

The Blue Jays are coming off their biggest victory in 32 years when they came from behind to defeat the Seattle Mariners in a Game 7 of the AL Championship Series just four days ago. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is as tough of an out as they come and is hitting for power and average throughout the postseason, leading everyone in the playoffs in home runs, RBI and hits. George Springer, whose home run sent the Jays into the Fall Classic, has World Series experience, as does veteran pitcher Max Scherzer. They also have home-field advantage, where they were so good during the regular season. That will all help, but the Dodgers will be unfazed.

Yes, L.A. will be starting on the road for the third straight series. But what was their record in those games? 4-0. I see the well-rested Dodgers winning at least one of the first two games on the road to snatch the home-field edge, like they did against the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. And their star pitchers will again be too much for an opposing team. The Dodgers pitchers bring in a miniscule 2.45 ERA through 10 playoff games. That’s nearly two runs less than the Blue Jays’ 4.36 ERA. Pitching wins this series. The Blue Jays offense, which has the best OPS in the playoffs, will put up much more of a fight than the Brewers did, but when you trot out Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani, that’s a tall task. And the Dodgers’ deep lineup will deliver when it counts with Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts leading the charge.

The Dodgers might not have had a regular season to remember. But they’re having a postseason for the ages and it ends with a repeat championship.

Prediction: Dodgers in six

Who won the World Series last year?

The Dodgers won the 2024 World Series, their second title in five seasons. They beat the New York Yankees in the series, 4-1.

L.A. won both games at home to begin the series and then took a commanding 3-0 lead when the series shifted to New York. Like in 2025, the Dodgers’ starting pitchers were the difference in those wins.

The Yankees finally got on the board in the series when they erupted for an 11-4 win in Game 4. And it looked good again in Game 5 when they jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. But a series of errors led to five Dodgers runs in the top of the fifth and the Yankees never recovered. L.A. won, 7-6, and celebrated its championship at Yankee Stadium.

The Dodgers captured their eighth World Series championship.

When was the last time the Blue Jays went to the World Series?

While the Dodgers are in the World Series for the fifth time in nine years, it’s been a much longer wait for the Blue Jays.

The last time before 2025 that the Blue Jays were in the Fall Classic came in 1993. They beat the Phillies in six games to win back-to-back championships.

Brewers legend Paul Molitor was the MVP. It was Molitor’s first season in Toronto after 15 years in Milwaukee.
