The San Francisco Giants on Wednesday announced that University of Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello will be the team’s new manager.
Vitello, 47, won the national championship in college baseball in 2024 as part of his eight seasons as Tennessee’s head coach. He will replace Bob Melvin, who the Giants dismissed as manager last month following a disappointing 2025 season that ended without a postseason berth.
“Tony is one of the brightest, most innovative, and most respected coaches in college baseball today. Throughout our search, Tony’s leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to developing players stood out,” Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said in a statement.
Vitello said, “I’m excited to lead this group of players and represent the San Francisco Giants. I can’t wait to get started and work to establish a culture that makes Giants faithful proud.”
The Giants finished the 2025 season with a record of 81-81 under Melvin, who served just two years as manager in San Francisco after previously leading the San Diego Padres for two years.
