Some new MLB trade rumors have linked a pair of talented pitchers from the NL Central to the New York Mets.

After completing one of the great collapses in MLB history, there is sure to be some notable changes for the Mets this offseason. So far, they have already completely overhauled their coaching staff. However, among the various areas of the roster that need improvement, the front of their pitching staff will be a top priority.

Since missing the playoffs last month, there have been multiple reports linking them to a blockbuster trade for Detroit Tigers superstar Tarik Skubal. However, such a trade would be extremely difficult to pull off and would likely cost the Mets a significant amount. However, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden pointed to a pair of realistic alternative options this week.

According to Bowden, rumors continue to intensify that the Cincinnati Reds are seriously considering putting talented young starter Hunter Greene on the trade block this winter. He admitted surprise in being willing to move a 26-year-old one-time All-Star. However, he pointed to “Greene’s durability issues” and never making 27 starts as a reason during his career as the likely reason.

Nevertheless, he thinks the Reds would get a big return in a trade, and the Mets would be one of many teams that would make a run at him, including the Dodgers and Yankees. He is locked into an affordable contract through 2029.

Could the New York Mets target Sonny Gray trade?

But Greene was not the only talented pitcher Bowden believes could be a target of the Mets this winter. Recent reports have suggested the St. Louis Cardinals are more willing to move certain players and pick up some of the money left on their contracts.

One of those players is expected to be three-time All-Star Sonny Gray. He has two years and $36 million left on his deal, including a club option for 2027. Bowden believes that sort of a deal for a player with his resume will appeal to the Mets.

Sonny Gray stats: 14-8 record, 4.28 ERA, 1.234 WHIP, 201 SO, 38 BB

“Gray is signed for two more seasons, so teams such as the Mets and Orioles, who like shorter-term commitments to starting pitchers, would be great trade fits,” he wrote.
