The Blue Jays may have butchered the Dodgers in the opener, off the biggest World Series inning since 1968 and the third-biggest of all time, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk stealing the show with the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history and a two-run homer, but 11-4 is still only worth a single point on the board.

They haven’t traveled well at all this year. They went 54-27 (.667) with a run differential of +94 in Toronto in the regular season, and 40-41 (.494) with a -17 run differential on the road. Dave Roberts’ men, meanwhile, have been formidable at home, putting together a 52-29 (.642) record with a +94 run differential.

And there’s more. Since Games 3-5 are being played on consecutive days, this is where fatigue begins to bite for the starters, and the relievers and bullpen come into their own. Despite getting a bye through the Wild Card Series round, John Schneider has leaned heavily on Louie Varland, Mason Fluharty and Seranthony Dominguez this postseason, whereas the Dodgers’ relievers have been allowed to conserve their energy.

When the Blue Jays went back-to-back in ’93, nobody would have fathomed that their next journey to the Fall Classic would take 32 years. Standing in their way are a Dodgers team on the verge of the first successful defence of the title in a quarter of a century. It’s quite a stage for the franchises’ maiden postseason encounter.

There’s a nice bit of symmetry to their respective missions too. This season saw the Blue Jays become only the 14th team in MLB history to go from worst to first in the space of a year, as Schneider took the AL East title to Canada for the first time in a decade, and now the Dodgers are aiming to expand the exclusive club of 14 teams that have lifted the Commissioner’s Trophy two (or more) campaigns running.

Ohtani, of course, is the two-way heart and soul of the Dodgers. Long-recognized as the best player in the world, his scintillating, pennant-clinching display against the Brewers, during which he struck out 10 and allowed just two hits across six scoreless innings, and became the 12th player in history to score three home runs in a postseason game, was unlike anything Major League Baseball has ever seen before. Not even Babe Ruth can compete with that.

While Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hasn’t quite hit those heights, he’s been consistently brilliant, the player of the postseason so far. Even with the bye, he tops the postseason charts for home runs, hits, RBI and total bases. George Springer, meanwhile, hit a record-tying five home runs and picked up the MVP award to help the Astros top the Dodgers in seven in the World Series eight years ago.
