An MLB team can technically “run out of pitchers” in the sense of substituting in everyone on the roster who is a pitcher.

But there will always have to be one of the nine pitchers in the field on the mound, no matter who they officially are.

At a point deep in extra innings, a team could start warming up its starting pitcher scheduled for the next day.

And if it went even further than that, a position player could take the mound.

It’s hard to get to that point, because teams usually have a long reliever in the bullpen who can last five or seven or nine innings.

But if the game wants to go on forever, soon enough, weird options would be getting sent to the mound.
