
Riverside’s players discuss WPIAL baseball playoff opening round win

The WPIAL baseball quarterfinals got underway on May 19 with three Beaver Valley teams in action in Class 4A. Here is how all the action unfolded.

Central Valley pulled off a major upset in the WPIAL quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round for the first time in program history. West Mifflin believed to have won the game in the eighth inning after a game winning balk but after minutes of speculation, the call was reversed and the game continued. Second baseman Blake Heater was the hero for Central Valley in the 11th inning driving in the game winning run on an RBI single which scored Nate Angelo. The team will now face Elizabeth Forward in the semifinals.

No. 9 seeded Ambridge gave top-seeded Indiana everything that it could handle but fell in extra innings. Pitcher Joey Leseiko pitched a gem for Ambridge going eight innings allowing no runs on three hits, one walk while striking out nine. Indiana scored the game-winning run on a walk off RBI single to right field by Sully VanHoose.

Beaver Area’s season came to an end as Belle Vernon pulled off the upset to advance. Third baseman Maddox Tanner collected the only hits for Beaver Area going a perfect 3-for-3.
