LOS ANGELES — Forget Game 7 of the World Series, a rarity in the sport that can often result in two punch-drunk teams staggering off the ropes into an anti-climactic finish.

You want the real juice? Game 5 with the Series tied 2-2 is where it’s at.

That heart-thumping scenario plays out this evening, with the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers both aiming to gain the upper hand before the World Series heads back to Toronto for, at least, Game 6.

This is the eighth time in the past 15 years we’ve seen a 2-2 Series tie; in five of the past seven most recent occurences, the team that won Game 5 went on to capture the championship.

The only exceptions? The Washington Nationals in 2019, topping the Houston Astros in a rare World Series in which the road team won every game. And in 2011, the Texas Rangers held a 3-2 lead in the World Series – and then David Freese happened.

If the first four games of this Series have proven anything, it’s that both superstars and rank-and-file players can play the hero role. In Game 5, it’s a rematch of two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage, who, all together now, is making just the seventh start of his career.

Whether the Dodgers can improve their swing decisions against his split-finger fastball should play a big role in their reversal of the Game 1 outcome, when Toronto posted a nine-run sixth inning en route to an 11-4 win.

LOS ANGELES — These Blue Jays can be historic. They’re already fully convinced they’re something special.

“I think this is a quote from Herb Brooks,” says third baseman Ernie Clement, citing the man who led the 1980 USA men’s hockey team to a stunning gold medal. “But we are a team of uncommon men. I think a normal team would have folded today.

“And we’re not normal. I think we’re the best team in baseball. We got out of bed with our hair on fire and ready to play.” — Gabe Lacques
