SEATTLE — Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh has been named the Players’ Choice Award winner for Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).

“Since 1992, the Players’ Choice Awards have honored outstanding on- and off-the-field performances and are voted on by the players,” the Mariners said in a statement.

“The Big Dumper” is the first Mariner ever to win the overall award and becomes the fourth Mariner to take home the AL award, joining Ken Griffey Jr., Ichiro Suzuki, and two-time winner Alex Rodriguez.

Raleigh also won the Sporting News Player of the Year award last week, giving him wins on what the Mariners described as “two of the most prestigious awards voted on by his peers.”

Raleigh enjoyed an incredible season, slugging 60 home runs, winning the Home Run Derby in July, and leading the Mariners to their first AL West title since 2001.

The Mariners’ historic season ended in heartbreak with a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the ALCS.
