Earning their fourth consecutive victory, the Los Angeles Angels took down the Athletics, 4-3, on Monday evening at Sutter Health Park. The Angels are now 21-15 this season and 12-15 on the road.

Following a shaky first inning, Jose Soriano settled in nicely to give the halos six innings of work and earn his third victory (3-4). The right-hander opened the conest by allowing a double, walk and hit by pitch that loaded the bases with nobody out.

He managed to get the next batter, slugger Brent Rooker, to ground into a double play that scored the first run but secured two big outs. Shea Langeliers then followed with an RBI single before Soriano retired Nick Kurtz to escape the frame with no further damage.

Nolan Schanuel’s solo shot in the top of the frame had gotten the Angels on the board first, giving him his first blast since April 11 and only the third this year.

Through his final five innings, Soriano allowed four hits and just one more run on a two-out single from Rooker in the fifth. He tossed 100 pitches total, walking four and striking out four as his ERA moved to 3.57.

The Angels quickly jumped back in front in the third as a Zach Neto single and a Schanuel double put Athletics’ starter J.T. Ginn in trouble to begin the inning. Yoán Moncada evened the game on a groundout to second before Taylor Ward stepped up and drilled a two-run shot to left that made it 4-2.

Ward, who is hitting just .198 overall this season, has heated up significantly in recent games. The 31-year-old is hitting .300 over his last five games, tallying extra-base hits in each of those games. He has also homered in three consecutive games. With 13 homers overall, Ward is second in the American League behind just Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge.

Out of the bullpen, Ryan Zeferjahn, Hector Neris and Kenley Jansen each tossed shutout frames to shut the door on the Athletics. Jansen worked around a two-out single in the ninth from Jacob Wilson to earn his ninth save and third consecutive scoreless outing.

Looking to extend the win streak to five, the Angels will face the Athletics again on in the second of four on Tuesday evening. Los Angeles will send out right-hander Kyle Hendricks (1-5, 5.18 ERA) to face right-hander Gunnar Hoglund (1-1, 3.78 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
