After another disappointing postseason exit where the offense failed to deliver, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to address an aging lineup. With designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and catcher J.T. Realmuto entering free agency, it’s not a lock that they will be back and will need to be replaced. They could also look to upgrade their hitting through trades, but according to one team insider, the Phillies shouldn’t expect a “talented young player” back in a deal for an All-Star.

Trade Market for Bohm Could Be Limited

According to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Phillies could look to deal third baseman Alec Bohm this offseason. The Phillies reportedly tried to trade Bohm for then-Athletics closer Mason Miller and also former Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker but were rebuffed.

Teams might be more open to trading for Bohm this offseason as he has one year left of arbitration before hitting free agency following the 2026 season. But the Phillies shouldn’t shoot for the moon in trade talks again.

“That said, if the Phillies couldn’t find the right return for Bohm after a career 2024 season, it’s difficult to expect he’d net a ‘talented young player’ after a so-so 2025 season,” Gelb reports. “Teams desperate for offense might be more willing to take a bet on one year of Bohm, but they won’t surrender a top prospect for that.”

Gelb added that he doesn’t believe the Phillies would non-tender Bohm. He notes that Philadelphia would more likely pursue a deal exchanging Bohm for someone with comparable arbitration status and earnings — around $10.3 million according to MLB Trade Rumors — who better fits their roster needs, though finding such a trade partner won’t be easy.

A potential Bohm trade with the Los Angeles Angels could make sense if they’re willing to part with outfielder Taylor Ward. The Phillies need a right-handed bat to platoon with Brandon Marsh, and Ward would fit that bill. Ward belted a career-high 36 home runs in 2024 and smashes lefties with a career .824 OPS against southpaws. He’s under club control for one more year at $11.2 million.

If the Phillies part with Bohm, they could start top prospect Aidan Miller at third in 2026 or go the free-agent route by signing someone like Alex Bregman or Eugenio Suarez.

In six seasons with the Phillies, Bohm has slashed .279/.328/.415 with a 104 OPS+, 70 home runs, 143 doubles and a 5.1 bWAR.
