DENTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting involving four Denton police officers that occurred early Sunday morning. 

The incident began when Denton Public Safety Communications received a 911 call at 3:55 a.m. about a suspect shooting at unoccupied vehicles on Oxford Lane.

The suspect fired his weapon as officers arrived, prompting them to establish a perimeter and attempt communication, according to the Denton Police Department. When the suspect began firing toward the officers, they returned fire, striking him. Officers administered first aid, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release his identity after notifying his family.

No officers or residents were injured during the incident. In line with department policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while Internal Affairs conducts an administrative investigation. All inquiries regarding the criminal investigation should be directed to the Texas Rangers, stated the source.
