Former Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs pitcher Yoervis Medina has died in Venezuela, according to a local outlet. He was 37 years old.
Medina died last Thursday after suffering a heart attack while driving, according to the report.
Yoervis Medina crashed into parked cars after suffering a heart attack and was dead when authorities arrived, the report states.
“We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Mariners pitcher Yoervis Medina. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends,” the Mariners said in a statement.
Medina spent three seasons playing Major League Baseball, pitching for the Mariners from 2013-15 and ending his career with the Cubs in 2015 after being traded to Chicago.
He appeared in 146 games over the course of his MLB career, finishing with a 10-9 record. He had a 3.08 ERA and 1.36 WHIP for his career. Medina also struck out 147 batters in 146 innings pitched.
Yoervis Medina had his best year in 2014 when he went 5-3 with a 2.68 ERA.
He struggled in 2015 after being traded to the Cubs and was eventually designated for assignment after a handful of games.
In addition to the Mariners and Cubs, Medina also spent time with the Pirates and Phillies organizations, although he didn’t appear in a game at the major league level with those franchises.
