The New York Mets missed the postseason this year, and now Pete Alonso could leave the team. He is a free agent and figures to find the long-term deal he wanted last year.

Alonso was named an All-Star for the fifth time and was even better last season than in 2024. The Mets may still be unwilling to commit to him long-term, and MassLive’s Christopher Smith predicted he would sign with the Boston Red Sox.

“The Red Sox hit the third fewest home runs during the final two months of the regular season,” wrote Smith. “Either Alonso or Kyle Schwarber makes sense. But Alonso might make a little more sense because of Boston’s need at first base and Craig Breslow’s desire to have flexibility at DH.”

The Red Sox came into the year expecting big things from Triston Casas. However, he failed to live up to the hype even before his season-ending injury. Now, the future at first base is very much up in the air. Alonso would fix that in a big way. He would have led the Red Sox in hits, home runs and RBIs last season.

Only Schwarber and Aaron Judge have hit more home runs than Alonso since 2019. He is one of the best first basemen in baseball and will not be cheap. The Red Sox still may want to bring Alex Bregman back, which would also cost them big. The team does have some room to spend after trading Rafael Devers, but signing both Alonso and Bregman may be difficult.
