LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) – On this day in 2021, Leesburg native and professional baseball catcher Gerald Dempsey “Buster” Posey III announced his retirement.
From the diamond to the front office, Posey made waves in Major League Baseball. The former San Francisco Giants catcher and three-time World Series champion led the team’s baseball operations.
Posey’s Hall of Fame career included a Rookie of the Year award, an MVP title, and a rule change named after him. He helped Team USA win gold, caught a perfect game, and led the Giants to a franchise record season in his final year.
Posey’s retirement announcement made him just the fifth player in the San Francisco era to spend his entire career with the Giants.
