The White Sox are coming off a terrible series against the Chicago Cubs where they were outscored 26-8. A lot went wrong, as it seems like nothing was working for the White Sox. However, there were a few bright spots, as Miguel Vargas and Chase Meidroth both had a great series with the bat.Â
Despite an outstanding series from both of them, you aren’t going to win many games when you are only scoring 2-3 runs. The White Sox will soon be getting a boost in the lineup, as Korey Lee is scheduled to return from the IL any day now.Â
Lee will be a very nice addition to the lineup, as before he was hurt he was hitting .333 with a .415 OBP over nine games. He has continued to hit in the minor leagues on his rehab assignment, as he is currently hitting .357 with a .419 OBP over seven games with the Charlotte Knights.
Korey Lee is Clutch!! 💪

This should be a nice boost to the lineup, as Korey Lee can either DH or be a solid presence behind the plate. However, Lee’s return could complicate some things, as the White Sox have had some solid play from behind the plate in Lee’s absence.Â
While Lee has been hurt Matt Thaiss and Edgar Quero have held down the fort. Thaiss is hitting .211 but he has a very solid .371 OBP, as he has walked a ton. This, combined with very solid defense behind the plate (minus the one Cubs game) has translated to .7 WAR, which ranks among the best on the Chicago White Sox.Â

Additionally, Edgar Quero has looked like every part his top-100 prospect self, as he has hit .280 with a .372 OBP, accumulating .5 WAR in just 25 games. Quero has not looked overwhelmed in the slightest, as he has put together some great at-bats and clutch hits throughout his short MLB tenure.Â
Edgar Quero is having a quiet, but amazing start to his MLB-career:
16 G
.340 BA
.446 OBP
.850 SLG
3 2B
1.4 BB/K
8 RBI
9.6% K%
13% Whiff%
He’s been one of the most polished prospects for ages, and never truly got the appreciation he deserves! 💎

With these solid starts to the season, I can’t imagine the Sox would DFA Thaiss, as he may hold some value come the trade deadline. I also would think that sending down Quero wouldn’t send the right message to the young guys, so, the question is, how do the White Sox handle three catchers?Â
At this point, I could see the White Sox carrying three catchers and rotate them behind the plate and DH. Matt Thaiss has played first base in the major leagues, so that is an option as well, as they can let him rotate in with Vaughn and Elko. While it is a bold move to have three catchers on the roster, perhaps they could utilize Thaiss’ positional versatility, and if they want to call up Kyle Teel, they could put him at another position as well.
Unless they can find a trade partner for Thaiss before Lee gets called up, they should go with three catchers, as it can keep each of their legs fresh for the long season. This is a great problem to have, as having more than one capable major league catcher is very important, as they don’t play all 162 games.Â
The White Sox typically don’t have issues with too many decent/good players at a position at one time, so it will be interesting to see how they handle this. Their best bet is to go with three catchers and see how that works, as Kyle Teel is knocking on the door of his MLB debut, and if the White Sox want to keep Korey Lee, that would still leave them with three catchers if Thaiss is traded.
