Doing research on the history of Montrose often turns up references to past baseball teams. Such was the case with this article published in the March 25, 1950, issue of the Fort Madison Evening Democrat. This one is especially interesting as it names team members and the position each played. We quote: “Members of the Mohawk baseball squad are pitchers (Keith) Dye, (George) Smiley and Tom Azinger; catchers Bud McLearn and Eugene Brisby; infielders B. (Blaine) Molsberry, Herm Azinger, George Cale and Bill Shaw; and outfielders Ted Davis, C. (Carl ‘Juney’) Weirather, Richard Bryant, R. R. (Richard) Deerfield, Darrell Conlee and R. (Richard) Jordan.”

How many of these players do you remember? Help preserve the baseball history of Montrose by purchasing the 2025 Baseball Heritage ornament. See Helen at the Friendsgiving meal on Saturday evening, Nov. 8 at the Landing to purchase this year’s ornament for $12.
