DELTA — Archbold entered Monday’s Northwest Ohio Athletic League baseball game against Delta looking to three-peat as league champions.
Delta, hosting the Bluestreaks, pitched well enough to prevent that from happening, but one defensive miscue for the Panthers was all Archbold needed as it scored an unearned run in the first inning and Zach Short fired a 17-strikeout no-hitter to lead the Streaks to a 1-0 victory.
The league championship, which Archbold will share with Evergreen after the Vikings defeated Liberty Center Monday night, is the Bluestreaks’ fifth league title in the past eight seasons and their 20th overall.
“I’m just really proud of the players. They have practiced so hard and it started last summer during ACME ball,” Archbold coach Jeff Brunswick said. “The attendance rate for the offseason was tremendous and I’m just really proud of the players. We had a stretch for two weeks where we were in the gym and they continued to bring the energy every day and that’s not easy to do. It’s a credit to the players.”
Archbold, which improved to 11-5 overall and finished 6-1 in the NWOAL, plated the game’s only run in the top of the first inning.
Delta (4-9, 3-4) pitcher Brady Morr sandwiched a pair of outs around a four-pitch walk to Tripp Langenderfer, who advanced to a second base on a groundout.
Langenderfer later advanced to third base on a pitch in the dirt and scored on the potential inning-ending play, when Morr induced a two-out popup in front of home plate.
The catcher took a few steps in front of the plate, but the ball skipped off the palm of the glove and Langenderfer scored on the play. Morr got the next batter out on the first pitch, but Archbold led 1-0.
One run was all Short needed on the mound, as the senior had four 1-2-3 innings and a fifth inning where he was facing a fourth batter but the inning ended on a runner caught stealing.
“Everybody has so much confidence in Zach and he has went to another level this year,” Brunswick said. “Just a tremendous game, a tremendous year so far and just really proud of him. … He just pounds the zone.”
In three of Short’s 1-2-3 frames he struck out the side and he added three strikeouts in the sixth inning, where he escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam — after an infield error and two hit batters — by getting the next batter to strike out looking.
Short finished with one walk, three hit batters and 17 strikeouts across seven no-hit, scoreless innings.
“The game has slowed down for him. He doesn’t let pressure get to him and he’s able to make the quality pitches that he needs to make,” Brunswick said.
Archbold finished with three hits, as Anderson Bentley, CJ Arroyo-Thompson and Ethan Bowman each singled.
Jacob Walter had the lone walk for the Panthers, Brady Morr reached on a third-base error and Lane Lopez reached base twice after being hit by a pair of pitches.
Archbold hosts Tinora today, while Delta hosts Toledo Start today.
