Senior Carly Zych hit two home runs, pitched a no-hitter in a busy week where the Oregon softball team won three games and lost its first game of the season.
Oregon (21-2, 12-1 Badger Large) lost its first game 10-4 to Muskego on Saturday, May 17, at Franklin High School. In the second nonconference game on Saturday, the Panthers bounced back to beat Franklin 8-4.
Oregon was coming off a 13-0 Badger Large Conference win over Monona Grove on Tuesday, May 13, at Taylor Prairie Elementary School and a 5-1 nonconference win over Middleton on Friday, May 16, at Firefighter’s Park. Oregon lost its first conference game to Watertown 8-6 on Monday, May 19. Both Oregon and Watertown are tied atop the Badger Large with each having one conference game left.
Watertown 8, Oregon 6
The Goslings scored the go-ahead run on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Watertown’s Allison Howlett followed with an RBI single to give the Goslings a 6-4 lead.
Oregon’s Annika Monte went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Both Annabelle Monte and Zych finished 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Zych pitched four innings and gave up four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out three and walked one.
Oregon 8, Franklin 4
Zych went 3-for-3 and finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the Panthers’ win over Franklin.
Oregon erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning on six hits. Kaylee Radke knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly. Zych and Teagan Simpson followed with RBI doubles. Chloe Zagrodnik pitched a complete game to earn the win. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
Muskego 10, Oregon 4
Zych hit a home run to center in the top of the first, but Muskego would rally.
Muskego broke the game open with a seven-run fifth on seven hits. Oregon’s Annika Monte went 2-for-4.
Oregon 5, Middleton 1
Zych went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to propel the Panthers to a nonconference victory over the Cardinals.
Zych hit a solo home run to center in the first. Simpson finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Avery Prescott went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Zych pitched a complete game four-hitter to earn the win. She gave up only one unearned run and struck out eight.
Oregon 13, Monona Grove 0 (5 inn.)
Zych pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight in the Panthers’ conference win over Monona Grove on May 13.
Zych helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Annika Monte finished 3-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Simpson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Annabelle Monte went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Panthers finished with 14 hits.
