The Kansas City Royals added to their front office Thursday, hiring Cullen Maxey as their new president of business operations.
Maxey will oversee all departments outside of baseball operations for the Royals. He succeeds Brooks Sherman, who has moved into a new role as the club’s president of real estate and development.

“This is an opportunity and fit that I never would have dreamed of,” Maxey said in a news release. “The Royals are known throughout the industry for how much they care about the Kansas City region and their fans.
“Working with this homegrown ownership group that’s invested so much already with plans of doing even more to strengthen this community is an honor.”
Maxey arrives from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He spent two decades there in various roles.

Sherman will shift his focus toward the Royals’ pursuit of a new stadium. The club hopes to decide upon a preferred location in the near future.
This week, Royals unveiled a fan survey designed to solicit feedback on a variety of topics. As for the future of their playing venue, the Royals are considering potential sites in or near downtown Kansas City, Clay County/North Kansas City and Johnson County/Overland Park.
The states of Kansas and Missouri have extended separate offers designed to help fund a potential stadium. The Royals have reiterated that they do not intend to continue playing at Kauffman Stadium once their lease expires after the 2030 season.

“We believe that Cullen’s proven leadership and relevant experience will fit the organization strategically, operationally, and culturally,” Royals owner John Sherman, no relation to Brooks Sherman, said in the news release announcing the front-office moves.
“This also allows Brooks to focus on our next home and the surrounding mixed-use development that will help define our future. I’m grateful for Cullen’s trust and confidence and know that along with what J.J. Picollo is building in Baseball Operations, the Royals are moving in the right direction.”
Maxey will begin his new role on Monday.
