WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump recently pardoned former famous New York Mets baseball player Darryl Strawberry of his past tax evasion and drug charges.
Strawberry was an eight-time All-Star player who played in the outfield.
In 17 seasons, he hit 335 homers and stole 221 bases, according to ABC News.
In 1995 he pleaded guilty to a single count of being indicted for tax evasion due to not reporting $350,000 in income from autographs.
He was later charged with possession of cocaine and soliciting a prostitute and pleaded no contest.
He served prison time in 2002 in Florida and was released in 2003.
While his wife was recovering from surgery, he got a phone call from Washington D.C. and later realized it was the president.
“I put it on speakerphone with my wife nearby, and President Trump spoke warmly about my baseball days in NYC, praising me as one the greatest player of the ’80s and celebrating the Mets,” Strawberry said, according to ABC News.
“Then, he told me he was granting me a full pardon from my past.”
He said he was overwhelmed with gratitude after hearing the news of his pardon.
“This experience has deepened my faith and commitment to working for His kingdom as a true follower of Jesus Christ,” Strawberry said.
“This has nothing to do with politics — it’s about a man, President Trump, caring deeply for a friend,” he later wrote. “God used him as a vessel to set me free forever!”
