In the midst of one of the poorest seasons by a single team in MLB history, the Colorado Rockies and their fans had one thing to be happy about all season — the performance of Hunter Goodman at the plate. The 26-year-old hit 31 home runs en route to having one of the best hitting seasons by an NL catcher in years, and was recognized with one of baseball’s top honors as a result.

Goodman was named as the catcher to win the NL Silver Slugger Award, and he is the first catcher in franchise history to bring this honor back to 20th and Blake. On top of his 31 home runs, Goodman slashed .278/.323/.520 to go with another 33 extra-base hits. He also posted a 3.7 WAR, the highest mark on the Rockies.

He was a finalist alongside two other catchers who also put together solid seasons, the Brewers’ William Contreras and the Dodgers’ Will Smith. Contreras finished the season with 17 home runs and 28 doubles while slashing .260/.355/.399. Out on the West Coast, Smith racked up 17 homers, 20 doubles and a triple while slashing .296/.404/.497. His .404 on-base percentage would’ve been the second-best number in the league, only behind Aaron Judge, but he didn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify.

Goodman is the first Rockie to bring the Silver Slugger Award to the Mile High City since Trevor Story won the award back in 2019 as the National League’s nominee for shortstop. Overall, there have now been 17 players who have combined to win 33 Silver Slugger Awards in franchise history. Nolan Arenado and Todd Helton each won the award four times, tied for the most among any Rockie.
