With two outs in the ninth, down 7-0, it looked like the Scott County Cardinals were going to end their Senior Night shutout by Lexington Catholic.
Senior catcher Luke Huffman averted that fate.
With Justin Stevenson on first, Huffman skied a home run to left field to get the Cardinals on the board. The home run was Huffman’s first of the season.
“It felt good,” Huffman said. “I was hoping it would get the mojo up in the dugout and we would start a streak, but we will get after it tomorrow, I guess.”
The Cardinals mustered only three hits against the Knights (18-7). Two of those hits came from Keagan Hurt, who was 2-for-2 with a walk. Sebastian Arden also walked twice.
“We had some guys that were dialed in at the plate,” Cardinals coach Scott Willard said. “We’ve got to change our swing plane a bit to get to where we want to go.”
Senior Preston Luckett got the start on the mound, striking out four in five innings while giving up five runs, three earned.
Before the game, Scott County honored seven seniors: Huffman, Arden, Luckett, Justin Stevenson, Evan Allen, Seth Jean, and Jack Willhite.
The Cardinals struggled defensively, committing five errors, resulting in two unearned runs. Hurt finished out the game in release, with two innings, giving up three hits and two runs, while striking out two batters.
The game also capped a whirlwind middle of the week, as it was their fourth game in three days, after a rivalry win over Great Crossing and splitting a doubleheader with Bryan Station in Lexington on Thursday.
The win evens the season series between Lexington Catholic and Scott County.
The Cardinals defeated the Knights 10-7 in Lexington in their season-opener. The teams could meet up again in the 11th Region tournament.
Scott County’s scheduled matchup with Madison Central Friday was canceled due to weather concerns.
The Cardinals took on Frederick Douglass after press time on Thursday. The winner of that game secures a spot in the 11th Region tournament and a spot in the 42nd District Championship game with either Henry Clay or Sayre.
