San Francisco GiantsBuster Posey became the leader of the San Francisco Giants’ front office just over a year ago, and in that time, he’s proven to be anything but timid in the pursuit of building a championship-caliber baseball team in the Bay Area.

Last season, that was highlighted by the splashy addition of disgruntled Red Sox third (first?) baseman Rafael Devers. That trade hasn’t paid dividends just yet, but Devers is on a massive contract that keeps him under team control until 2034, so there will be time for him to find his footing in San Francisco.

After the Giants failed to make the postseason this past year, Posey took another swing, signing former Tennessee Volunteers manager Tony Vitello to come in and be the skipper in SF.

Posey has found a new manager for his squad, but what else could he have up his sleeve as the MLB offseason gets rolling?

This is a discussion of a prediction, not a report.

Kyle Tucker Signing With San Francisco Giants: Prediction Reaction

A few names headline the free agent market this offseason. There are a few high-end arms in the mix, but the discussion will be dominated by the likes of Pete Alonso, Kyle Tucker, and Kyle Schwarber.

These will be the biggest gets on the open market, but realistically, only a select number of teams will have access to these guys, as each of them is expected to command enormous contracts.

When it comes to Tucker in particular, he’ll blow everyone else out of the water. Some projections for his next deal have eclipsed $400 million, which would really narrow down the number of potential suitors.

Will Laws and Nick Selbe of Sports Illustrated believe that Posey and the Giants will make a lucrative offer and convince Tucker to make his way to San Francisco.

“Tucker will be aiming for a $500 million contract after he made his fourth consecutive All-Star team this year. His potential is tantalizing; in 2023, Tucker was one home run short of joining Jeff Bagwell and Carlos Beltrán as the only Astros to record a 30-30 season,” wrote Laws and Selbe.

Should The Giants Sign Kyle Tucker?

There’s a reason why Tucker has emerged as the most sought-after player in this year’s free agent class. The numbers and the eye test speak for themselves.

However, this wouldn’t be an ideal signing for the Giants.

They would likely be committing upwards of $400 million across a decade or so, keeping Tucker in San Francisco through his 30s. There are already fair concerns about the time he’s missed in recent years, and it’s also understandable to question whether he’ll be making an impact in the field as he hits his mid-30s.

His ability to be a game-changer at the plate is unquestioned, but what I’m getting at here is that it might not be wise for the Giants to get into a bidding war, as Tucker failing to be worth this price tag is a very real possibility.

Internally, from the Giants’ perspective, this also may not be a smart move from a team-building perspective. They’re likely more than just one All-Star bat away from being true contenders. This move would restrict them financially and could prevent them from building a sound, complete roster.

Altogether, this just seems like an expensive shortcut for the Giants, and one that they should avoid.

Tucker missed some time last year, most notably with a broken hand, but he was still able to put together a sensational season.
