The San Diego Padres have stayed in-house for a successor to Mike Shildt.
The team named Craig Stammen its new manager on Wednesday.
Stammen, 41, had been serving as a special assistant in player development for the team following his retirement as a player. A native of North Star, OH, Stammen appeared in 562 games over 13 seasons with the Washington Nationals and Padres from 2009 to 2022. After being utilized as a starter in his first two seasons, Stammen transitioned into relief for the remainder of his career.
Stammen takes over for Shildt, who announced his retirement last month. Shildt, 57, managed the Friars for the past two seasons after a previous four-year stint with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Padres finished the 2025 season at 90-72, in second place in the National League West. The team was eliminated from the playoffs by the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card Series in three games.
With the hiring of Stammen, the Colorado Rockies now have the only managerial vacancy in the league.
