PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks haven’t ruled out trading All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this offseason, a move that could signal a major shift in the team’s roster.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks are exploring potential trades for the veteran, though it would take a significant return to complete a deal.
Marte signed a long-term extension in April that would keep him in Arizona through the 2030 season, with a player option for 2031. If the Diamondbacks don’t move him by mid-April next year, he will gain full no-trade rights under 10-and-5 status.
While it may seem counterintuitive for the Diamondbacks to trade their star infielder coming off back-to-back MVP-caliber seasons, the timing and financial factors suggest the organization may be changing its approach.

Marte’s extension secured one of Arizona’s core players, but now his contract may be something the team wants to move on from. Trading the All-Star could bring in younger, cost-effective talent, but losing a proven performer would also carry significant risk.
In 2024, Marte finished third in MVP voting, behind Francisco Lindor and Shohei Ohtani. In 2025, he won the Silver Slugger Award after hitting 28 home runs and driving in 72 runs. His production has never been in question, but with the team expected to cut payroll in 2026, this extension remains a significant financial burden.
However, trading a core member of the roster at the peak of his career would carry an undeniable emotional impact for the Valley.

Marte has become one of the faces of the franchise. While players such as Paul Goldschmidt and Christian Walker have moved on, he has emerged as a fan favorite in their place. Trading a beloved star would mark a dramatic shift in the Diamondbacks’ identity. Other teams would certainly be intrigued by the chance to add a veteran like the All-Star, especially with a long-term extension.

While discussions are still ongoing and the D-Backs have until mid-April to make a decision, there’s a real possibility Marte may not be wearing Sedona Red for much longer.
