Today, in the second game of a four-game series, the Colorado Rockies (8-39) will face the Philadelphia Phillies (29-18).
In case you’ve just returned from being stranded on a desert island without internet, the Rockies continue to make baseball history (though not in a good way). Their 8-39 record is the worst in the Modern Era (since 1901) through 47 games. In addition, the Rockies -150 run differential is the worst in the Majors and the third-worst in the Modern Era through 47 games behind the 2023 Athletics (-166) and the 1932 Red Sox (-151).
The Rockies dropped the first game to the Phillies, 9-3. Monday’s loss was the Rockies’ 13th blown lead loss of the season. Only the Pirates (15) have more in the National League this season.
Tonight, however, the Rockies will look to even the series.
Jesús Luzardo will take the mound for the Phillies, a member of their rotation that boasts a “bevy of lefties.” Currently, he has started nine games, winning four with a 2.00 ERA. He’s pitched 54.0 innings with 57 Ks and a 1.19 WHIP.
Luzardo’s 2.00 ERA currently ranks second among qualified National League pitchers behind the New York Mets’ Kodai Senga (1.43) and seventh in MLB.
He has pitched two games at Coors Field and has surrendered 11 hits, nine for runs, and struck out four.
Antonio Senzatela will start for the Rockies tonight. He suffered his seventh loss of the season in his last start, May 14 at Texas, tied for the most losses in the Majors with the Orioles’ Charlie Morton (0-7) and the Phillies’ Aaron Nola (1-7).
This will be the ninth start for Senzatela, who has one win and seven losses in addition to a 6.39 ERA. He’s pitched 43.2 innings with 22 Ks and a 1.99 WHIP.
