No Red Sox player has been named AL Rookie of the Year since 2007 when Dustin Pedroia won the award and that didn’t change this year.

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz was the unanimous winner of the award, named first on all 30 ballots in voting conducted by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

But two Red Sox weren’t far behind.

Outfielder Roman Anthony finished third – behind another member of the A’s, shortstop Jacob Wilson — and catcher Carlos Narvaez was sixth.

Anthony received three second-place votes and 15 third-place votes, getting named on a total of 28 of the 30 ballots. Meanwhile, Narvaez collected two third-place votes and was named on 12 ballots.

Pitcher Noah Cameron of the Kansas City Royals and infielder Colson Montgomery of the Chicago White Sox finished fourth and fifth respectively, between the two Red Sox players.

Anthony was one of the most dynamic rookies in the game in 2025, with his promotion to the big leagues the subject of daily speculation. Anthony finally got the call in early June and performed well, with a slash line of .292/.396/.463. He added eight homers and 18 doubles in 71 games.

Despite playing less than half the season, Anthony finished sixth among the team’s position players in WAR at 3.1.

But Anthony suffered a strained oblique muscle in the first week of September, causing him to miss most of the final month of the season and take him out of the running for the award.

Narvaez, acquired in a minor trade last December, made the roster out of spring training as the team’s backup receiver and took over the No. 1 catcher’s role when Connor Wong suffered a broken bone in his hand in the second week of the season.

Narvaez, 26, hit 15 homers and knocked in 50 while leading all American League catchers in caught stealing, gunning down 30.3 percent of all would-be base stealers.

Narvaez also graded out well in other defensive metrics, with 10 defensive runs saved. He ranked in the 85th percentile in pitch framing and 88th percentile in pitch blocking.
