Entering the 2025 MLB offseason, the San Diego Padres are being viewed as one of the bigger wildcard teams across the league. Following another frustrating exit in the playoffs, the Padres come into the winter with a ton of questions to answer around the roster.
San Diego is set to lose a large chunk of its starting rotation, but weirdly enough, this isn’t the bigger problem that they are facing. Despite the star power on the roster, the Padres’ offense was fairly bad all year long, and it hurt them when it mattered most in the postseason.
Among the MLB teams during the 2025 season, San Diego ranked 28th overall in home runs, 18th in runs scored, and 16th in OPS (.711), among other statistics. These numbers aren’t going to get the job done against the elite teams in baseball, and it’s a strange phenomenon for this team with all the talent on the roster.
With these issues, it could see the Padres look to be big players on the open market again this offseason. Padres president of baseball operations, AJ Preller, is known for his bold moves, and we could see this take place again.
Even with the financial restraints that San Diego has implemented over the past few seasons, this team could look to spend this winter. The Padres have all the tools to be successful on the field, but they need something more to get over the himp.
San Diego’s front office has shown aggressiveness in recent years, and this could continue this year, especially following another World Series title from the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. But how the Padres plan to address the issues on the roster remains to be seen, and has many around baseball wondering.
This is just a prediction, NOT a report!

Cody Bellinger Lands With San Diego Padres
One option for the Padres could be to land a player that they are very familiar with, outfielder Cody Bellinger. Bellinger is entering free agency following an extremely solid year with the New York Yankees.
San Diego knows Bellinger well from his time in Los Angeles, and he could help solve some of the problems offensively that this team had. Last season with New York, Bellinger hit .272 with 29 home runs and 98 runs batted in.
Bellinger worked pretty hard on his strikeout rate, and he found a ton of success playing for the Yankees. If he could translate this type of production to the Padres lineup, San Diego may be able to finally get over the hump in the National League.Â
The veteran is still just 30 years old, so the Padres may feel better about the possibility of giving him a long-term contract. But Bellinger is also very strong defensively, so it could be worth it.
San Diego has to do something to address the offensive issues, and Bellinger could fit perfectly in this lineup. It may cost the team a lot to land him, but for the chance to go after a title, the Padres should be doing whatever it takes.
