Diamondbacks’ GM Mike Hazen takes a look back on the 2025 season

After just missing the playoffs, Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen put his assessment of the season into words.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly considering trading either outfielder Jake McCarthy or Alek Thomas this offseason.Trading one of the arbitration-eligible players could save the club over $1 million.

LAS VEGAS — The Diamondbacks still seem to be sorting through their options for how to proceed in several areas this offseason, but one possibility that seems more likely than most involves outfielders Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas.

That is, one of them appears likely to be traded this winter, according to sources.

Who goes and who stays is not clear, but the Diamondbacks believe they have a variety of other outfield options, including Jorge Barrosa, Tim Tawa, Blaze Alexander and perhaps Jordan Lawlar, who has played a handful of games in center field in winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

Both McCarthy and Thomas are arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and each projects to earn something close to $2 million. If the club were to move forward with a younger, less experienced player, it would save more than $1 million.

Neither McCarthy nor Thomas has been able to grab hold of an everyday role with the organization in recent years, though both have shown flashes.

McCarthy has been more productive at the plate, while Thomas has been, by and large, the better defender in center field, but neither has significant trade value at the moment.
