The New York Mets missed the postseason this year and now have some key players on the open market. Perhaps their biggest name in free agency is Pete Alonso.
Alonso is a five-time All-Star and had a great year after failing to find a long-term deal last winter. After playing even better than he did in his 2024 All-Star season, he should have plenty of interest on the open market. He is one of the best hitters in baseball and could change the outlook of some offenses around the league.
Many teams are looking to add power this winter, but some are more desperate than others. ESPN’s Jeff Passan urged the Arizona Diamondbacks to get Pete Alonso in free agency.

“As much as the instinct is to target pitching — and, no question, the Diamondbacks need more of that — putting a bopper behind (Geraldo) Perdomo, (Ketel) Marte and (Corbin) Carroll to take advantage of the trio’s excellent on-base skills would give Arizona one of the scariest lineups in the NL,” wrote Passan. “Seeing as one particular bopper can play first base or DH, two areas of need for Arizona, the fit feels strong.”
The Diamondbacks ranked in the top 10 in home runs last season. However, the team has barely missed the postseason both years after making the World Series in 2023. Adding Alonso would make them an even better power-hitting team in a very competitive division.
Between the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, there is no shortage of power in the National League West. Adding Alonso would help the Diamondbacks keep pace.
