Shohei Ohtani has claimed the National League MVP award for the second consecutive season, adding to the two MVP honors he earned in the American League during his time with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023.

Remarkably, all four of the Japanese star’s MVP awards have been unanimous selections.

Ohtani an MLB history maker

Ohtani is just the second player in MLB history to win MVP honors in both leagues, alongside Hall of Famer Frank Robinson.

He also joins Barry Bonds as the only players ever to capture at least four MVP awards in their careers. Bonds famously won four straight MVPs from 2001 to 2004.

What were Ohtani’s stats in 2025?

As a hitter, Ohtani posted a slash line of .282/.392/.622 with 55 home runs, 102 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, 89 extra-base hits, 146 runs scored, and 109 walks across 727 plate appearances. He led the National League in slugging percentage and OPS (1.014), topped OPS+ at 179, and drew 20 intentional walks. On top of that, he paced all of MLB in total bases (380) and runs scored.

After missing the 2024 season while recovering from elbow surgery, Ohtani returned to the mound and delivered a 2.87 ERA, a stellar 1.90 FIP, and a 1.04 WHIP. In 14 starts, he struck out 62 batters, walked just nine, and allowed only three home runs.

The two-way superstar swept all 30 first-place votes, finishing ahead of Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies and Juan Soto of the New York Mets.
