Ryan Helsley’s future is unclear. After being traded mid-season by the St. Louis Cardinals to the New York Mets, Helsley is now a free agent and he believes the St. Louis Cardinals will contact him. The questions are will they and should they?

Context and tone are everything when it comes to quotes from players. Ryan Helsley joined Jim Hayes and Kyle Gibson on the Cardinal Territory podcast and I highly recommend you listen to the full interview and hear what Ryan has to say about the possibilities of rejoining the Cardinals. Here’s a short snippet they just dropped on X.

Here are Ryan’s exact words from the X share. “I think I would expect them to reach out…I don’t know if it will be serious, but maybe to check in…kinda gauge the waters, so to speak. I had a good talk with Chaim after I was traded. It was really encouraging…possibly maybe coming back there. Obviously things changed. That was three months ago…I really enjoyed my time getting to know Chaim a little bit and think the Cardinals future is in really good hands with him.”

At the trade deadline, there were rumors that the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers were among the teams interested in trading for Ryan Helsley when he was still a Cardinal. After his time as a New York Met was less than ideal, there are legitimate questions about the level of interest from those teams now. The Texas Rangers would be an interesting possibility considering Skip Schumaker is their new manager. I’m not aware of any personal relationship between Helsley and Schumaker, but the St. Louis Cardinal connection is there. Ryan does live in Oklahoma, so Texas would be close to home.

Considering the St. Louis Cardinals rebuild strategy as stated by Chaim Bloom, should or would the team benefit from a short-term reunion with Ryan Helsley? That’s a question that Chaim Bloom and his team will have to answer as the off-season continues, but it appears there’s interest from Ryan for a St. Louis Cardinals reunion. Whether that could or should happen will be an interesting debate.
