Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase entered a plea of not guilty to the charges filed by federal prosecutors related to a sports gambling scheme that also involves teammate and starting pitcher Luis Ortiz.
Clase flew into New York Nov. 13 and entered his not guilty plea the same day. He had been out of the country.
Ortiz entered his own not guilty plea Nov. 12 in the same Brooklyn federal courthouse.
Clase and Ortiz were released on $600,000 and $500,000 bond, respectively. Both will be monitored with GPS tracking and have their movements limited to a few states.
Ortiz and Clase are each facing up to 65 years in prison for their alleged roles in the scheme that, according to the 23-page indictment, involved gamblers winning fraudulent bets due to both pitchers purposefully throwing balls in certain situations. Both are facing a series of charges that include wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, among others.
