TORONTO—The San Diego Padres struggled to score a run in a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
The Padres’ offensive struggle continued in the opener of a six-game road trip. San Diego carried an 0-for-21 with runners in scoring position into Toronto and that streak got worse and moved to 0-for-24 with three more missed opportunities.
Dylan Cease (1-3, 4.50 ERA) pitched well into the seventh inning. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Cease has not won in eight starts, trying to record a victory since April 2 against Cleveland.
Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Gavin Sheets, and Jason Hayward each hit a single. Luis Arraez had the only-extra hit of the game when he hit a double in the first inning.
This was the third time San Diego failed to score a run this season; it was also the first shutout for Toronto this season.
The Padres have lost four in a row, scoring a total of three runs in that span and no more than one in a game. The fourth consecutive loss matches their longest losing streak of the season.
Right-hander Randy Vásquez (3-3, 3.45) is set to take on the rubber for the Padres against right-hander Kevin Gausman (3-4, 4.59) on Wednesday at 4:07 p.m.
