Veteran right-hander Walker Buehler is a free agent again this offseason, but unlike last year, he doesn’t have his postseason heroics to go off of. Buehler split time between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies this past season, and things didn’t go as planned.
In 23 appearances with the Red Sox, Buehler posted an ERA of 5.45 over 112.1 innings of work. The Red Sox eventually released him, and he joined the Phillies for the stretch run.
In 13.2 innings with Philadelphia, Buehler looked a little better, posting an ERA of 0.66. However, this was a very small sample size, and the veteran didn’t pitch in the postseason for the Phillies.
Overall, it was a tough season for the veteran right-hander, and it’s likely to impact his free agent market. But due to his reputation over the years in the big leagues, there will be a few teams that look to bring him into the mix.
The 2024 World Series hero could be a cost-effective signing for pitching-needy clubs, and it could be another prove-it type of contract for him. Teams likely won’t break the bank for Buehler, but a two-year deal with an early opt-out could be on the table for the right-hander in all possibilities.
However, it remains to be seen where Buehler could land or what teams may want him. Much of this will also depend on what type of role Buehler wants, so this will be something to keep an eye on going forward.
This is just a prediction, NOT a report!

Walker Buehler Signs With Cincinnati Reds
As Buehler searches for his next team, the Cincinnati Reds could be a solid option. Cincinnati is coming off an appearance in the postseason, and even with the team not likely to spend a ton, adding a player like Buehler could help things.
The Reds have a solid pitching staff in place, but every team needs as much pitching depth as possible. Buehler could be a backend starting option for this team, and he has shown a willingness to come out of the bullpen as well.
Cincinnati wants to build on the success that it saw this past season, and Buehler could take on the role as a leader in the clubhouse. Due to his fiery personality, it could be a perfect fit for this young Reds team.
Buehler would bring championship experience to the table, and he could really take some of the younger pitchers under his wing. The veteran could also help this team eat innings throughout the season, and it could be the perfect place for him to build his value back up.
This would also be a homecoming of sorts for Buehler, since he is from around the Kentucky area. Playing for Terry Francona could also interest Buehler, and this could be a great partnership between the two sides.
Since Cincinnati is now looking to get into the postseason, having someone like Buehler could help, especially with his reputation come playoff time. All in all, this could be a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for the Reds to make, and it’s something that both sides should be considering this offseason.
