The funeral for Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo will be on Tuesday morning at LoanDepot Park, the Little Havana home of the Miami Marlins.

The sheriff’s office is expecting 10,000 to 20,000 people at the service, which will come after a private funeral Mass. The service at the stadium is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 1 p.m., said Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Detective Argemis Colome.

There will be a procession to and from the stadium, so expect traffic delays, the sheriff’s office said. Exact routes have not yet been released.

Jaramillo, 27, was shot to death by 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian Nov. 7 near Kendall. A routine stop involving a minor car crash turned deadly when the two men got into an altercation before Rustrian grabbed Jaramillo’s service weapon and shot him several times.

Rustrian then walked to his car, got in, and fatally shot himself.

Jaramillo served nearly a year and a half with the sheriff’s office, which he joined after four years with the Coral Gables Police Department.

Jaramillo graduated from Miami Killian High School and the University of Central Florida, and is the son of a retired Miami-Dade police detective and president of the Hispanic Police Officer’s Association. The sheriff’s office says he was a “legacy kid” who was well-respected among the agency’s ranks.

“He could have done anything with his professional career, but he chose public service, and he chose to do it in this community to serve us, and he gave the ultimate price in his service,” Cordero-Stutz said.

Jaramillo, assigned to the Kendall District Station, was the only deputy who responded to the crash, part of standard policy for collisions with minor damage.

Rustrian drove away from the scene to a nearby parking lot, switching seats with a passenger, investigators say.

Jaramillo spoke with that man who initially said he was the driver, but then admitted Rustrian was behind the wheel. That’s when the fight happened between Jaramillo and Rustrian.

A video provided to the Miami Herald shows Jaramillo trying to subdue Rustrian, struggling on the ground and Rustrian grabbing Jaramillo’s gun.

Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami has reported that the deputy was shot at least seven times.

Paramedics took the officer to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he died.
